Magnolias
Magnoliaceae is an old lineage among the flowering plants, and its flowers still show it: the parts are set in a spiral on an elongated axis rather than in whorls, and the perianth is thick and firm, built for the beetles that are the family's principal pollinators rather than for bees.
In Colombia the family is of high conservation concern. Many species are known from small areas, a large share are assessed as threatened, and the Andean cordilleras continue to yield taxa new to science. The trees are large and slow-growing, and were logged for timber under the name almanegra long before most of them were formally named.
