Ecosystems
Landscape-scale portraits of the vereda's life zones.
Where the rest of the book works species by species, this chapter steps back
to the scale of the whole forest — how the canopy is put together, how it is
changing, and what it takes to survey a mountainside that is too steep and
too remote to walk transect by transect.
Ecosystems is the home for longer, figure-driven pieces: research articles, survey write-ups, and essays about the landscape itself rather than any one organism living in it.

Dicksonia on the Murringo trail, Río Verde de los Montes, Sonsón
A tree fern barely documented in eastern Antioquia grows on the Murringo trail, at the foot of the Sonsón páramo; to the north, toward La Honda, I have not found it.

A new locality for Magnolia unicarmensis and Magnolia guatapensis in Río Verde de los Henaos, Sonsón
The La Honda forest continues south along the Central Cordillera, and both magnolias go with it.
