Hairy tree ferns
One of the three tree-fern families documented here, and the one that answers Cyatheaceae character for character. Where the scaly tree ferns carry flattened scales at the base of the stipe, Dicksoniaceae carries hairs — soft, often golden, and dense enough to feel. That single difference is what a field determination usually turns on.
Not every member of the family builds a trunk. Some grow from a stout creeping rhizome instead, so a stand reads as a thicket of very large fronds rather than as a grove.
