Every amphibian recorded at La Honda sits here, undivided. The chapter is small enough that splitting it by family would put one or two sheets behind each card, which costs the reader a click and tells them nothing they could not read off the sheet itself. When the list grows, the families can come back.
Amphibians are tied to humid microhabitat rather than to open water. In an Andean cloud forest most are found in leaf litter, moss, bromeliad tanks and along stream banks, and several lineages here have dispensed with the tadpole altogether, laying eggs that hatch directly into miniature adults. That releases them from standing water and lets them occupy the whole slope.
The group is also the one most exposed to change. Skin permeable enough to breathe and take up water through is equally permeable to what is dissolved in it, which is why amphibians register habitat loss, drying and disease earlier than most vertebrates.
